A San Juan Adventure
Join us for
this exciting narrow gauge train ride through the San Juan Mountains
on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad.
The C&TS RR was originally built and owned by the Denver
& Rio Grande railroad and was called the San Juan Extension.
This narrow gauge line ran from Antonito, Colorado to Silverton
with branch lines to other mountain towns in the San Juan Mts.
In 1971, the states of New Mexico and Colorado purchased the section
between Antonito and Chama, N.M., from the D&RGW and renamed
it the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic RR.
Our trip begins in Chama, N.M.
with the morning preparations for the day's doubleheader. Our
eastbound train doubleheads to Cumbres Pass, then with the single
road engine, continues on to Osier, Colo. Next we ride the westbound
train leaving Antonito, Colo. also traveling to Osier. Using the
magic of video, we ride both trains, traveling through gorgeous
fall foliage, around narrow cliffs above the Toltec Gorge and
Wolf Creek, over three bridges, through two tunnels, past six
water tanks, around torturous curves and goblin-like rock formations,
across flat prairie and through high mountain passes.
We'll
watch track maintenance, fire control in operation, the rock patrol
clearing the track and some cliff hanging, tie bouncing videography
at rail level. You'll enjoy all those views and special train
operations that you almost were able to photograph.
Come with us and the C&TS RR for this complete
fall foliage video adventure on the rugged San Juan Extension.

Last Train To Cumbres
In
October of 1994, while finishing another banner year for the C&TS RR,
3 feet of snow dumped in 24 hours. The tracks were buried as trees,
still in foliage, came down along with the power lines. Although
the last operating day was canceled, a post season equipment transfer
was required before the line would be blocked by winter snow.
Watch engine 489 buck 4 foot snow drifts
climbing to Cumbres Pass from Antonito, Then with maximum tonnage,
engine 489 teams with historical engine 463 in a final attempt
to pull the last transfer train over Cumbres.
You'll see the two engines
work to capacity as they, stroke by stroke and slip after slip
pull the load through deep snow up the 4% grade.
You'll be on the edge of your chair
helping the engineer ease the train upward over the top. Join
the action from trackside, in the caboose and from inside the
cab as we ride, The Last Train to Cumbres.

The Battle To Cumbres Pass
The Winter
of 1993 was the heaviest snowfall in 15 years for the Cumbres
and Toltec Scenic Railroad. Two week before opening day, drifts
20 feet deep blocked the tracks. Rotary OY was called to clear
the line from Chama, N.M. to Antonito, Colo.
It would require three engines to push the rotary uphill through
the dense snow and ice. The use of a triple header with the 1923
Leslie Rotary OY has not been seen on this line since 1963. After
4 long, exhausting days, the line had been cleared only as far
as Osier. The, "Battle To Cumbres Pass", is truly a
battle of men and machine against the snowpack.
Watch the 11-foot diameter
rotary blade throw snow 150 feet. Ride with Earl Knoob in the
pilot house and sling coal into the firebox alongside Tom Evans.
View the working rotary from the lead engine, then tour the inner
workings with chief mechanical officer John Bush.
Seven-camera coverage captures all the action. Listen to the rotary
with incredible digital stereophonic sound.

The RGS Lives - 463
Returns
Engine 463, built in
1903 for the DRGWRR and used on the Rio Grande Southern RR (RGS)

it looked during the final operating years of the RGS.
Watch the many phases of the 2 year
restoration as #463 is transformed from a derelict hulk to a fully
restored engine on the C and TS RR.
Join restored engine
463 for its maiden run over Cumbres Pass, then follow our engine
on its first double header. You'll watch restored 463 on its work
train debut, then chase the engine on a DRGW '40s style photo
